The Bo-Kaap is one of Cape Townâs most distinct neighbourhoods and thereâs so much to see, taste and explore.
Situated at the foot of Signal Hill, on the fringe of the city centre, and formerly known as the Malay Quarter, the Bo-Kaapâs origins date back to the 1760s when numerous âhuurhuisjesâ (rental houses) were built and leased to slaves. These people were known as Cape Malays, and were brought from Malaysia, Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape.
To this day, the houses are a mix of Cape Dutch and Georgian architecture, in distinctive multi-coloured rows on steeply cobbled roads. The choice of colour is said to be attributed to the fact that while on lease, all the houses had to be white. When this rule was eventually lifted, and the slaves were allowed to buy the properties, all the houses were painted bright colours by their owners as an expression of their freedom.
Many of the families in the Bo-Kaap have been living there for generations. Today the Bo-Kaap community is a significant part of our cultural heritage.
The oldest building in the Bo-Kaap is in Wale Street and currently houses the Bo-Kaap Museum. This is the best place to discover the real history of the area and to get a glimpse into the life of a typical Malay family.
The first established Muslim mosque in South Africa, the Auwal Mosque, can also be found in the Bo-Kaap.
A five-minute walk from the city centre and De Waterkant and a 20-minute walk to the V&A Waterfront, the Bo-Kaap is best accessed by foot along Wale Street. Explore the Islamic âkramatsâ (shrines), mosques and food and craft markets, and discover the delicious Cape Malay cooking style.
The tour takes 3.5 hours including the ferry trip to and from the Island (Depending on the boat used as they have different travel times).
You will disembark at Murrayâs Bay Harbour situated on the east coast of the Island and take a short walk to buses that will transport you to all the historical sites around the Island. On the way to the buses, you will pass buildings and a high wall built by prisoners during the 1960s. The buildings were used for family and lawyer visits to prisoners.
You will meet your Tour Guide when you have boarded the busses. The prison tour will be conducted by a Robben Island Tour Guide. This is part of our integrated tour model. They are fully conversant and knowledgeable about the Islandâs multi-layered 500-year-old history. The tour route includes the graveyard of people who died from leprosy, the Lime Quarry, Robert Sobukweâs house, the Bluestone quarry, the army and navy bunkers and the Maximum Security Prison where thousands of South Africaâs freedom fighters were incarcerated for years. The tour culminates with a viewing of Nelson Mandelaâs cell.
The V&A Waterfront is a mixed-use development comprising residential and commercial property, hotels, retail stores, dining, leisure and entertainment facilities. Spanning 123 hectares, itâs a space where you can work, live, eat and play.
Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, visited the Cape Colony harbour in 1860 as a sixteen-year-old Royal Navy Midshipman on HMS Euryalus. He made a big splash with the colonials on this first-ever visit by a member of the Royal Family. The first basin of the new Navy Yard was named after him and the second after his mother.
A South African braai is more than just a barbecue; it's a cherished cultural tradition that brings friends and family together around an open fire to cook and enjoy a variety of meats, including beef, chicken, lamb, and local specialties such as boerewors (a type of sausage) and sosaties (marinated meat skewers).
The event is as much about the social gathering as it is about the food, embodying a sense of community and celebration. Alongside the meats, side dishes such as grilled vegetables, salads, and traditional accompaniments like pap (a type of maize porridge) are served. The braai is an integral part of South African heritage, celebrated for its ability to unite people across diverse backgrounds.

Begun with a vision of reviving the community market as a social institution, The Neighbourgoods Market was held for the first time in September of 2006.
Housed in the historic sky-lit warehouse of The Old Biscuit Mill, the market quickly established itself as a catalyst for - and celebration of - the urban renaissance that has seen the once dilapidated neighbourhood of Woodstock become the thriving heart of the cityâs creative industries.
A decade later it remains the essential showcase of Cape Townâs finest micro-merchants, designer-makers, specialty-producers and food-alchemists.
A vital platform for the nurturing and growth of the individuals who turn their passions into prosperity, and a vibrant weekly meeting place to enjoy community, swap ideas and stories, and collectively contribute to the iconic culture of the Mother City.
